The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is designed to help low-income families pay their rent. Eligible families select their own rental unit and pay no more than 40% of their family income towards rent. The Aitkin County HRA pays the remaining balance.

 

Those eligible for the program include:

 

• Elderly

• Handicapped or disabled individuals

• Families of two or more persons

• Single persons

 

Income guidelines do apply.

 

Rental units must pass specific Housing Quality Standards and are inspected per HUD guidelines. Rental units that are included in the program may be: privately-owned duplexes, town homes, apartment unit cooperatives, congregate housing, single-family homes, and mobile homes that are the appropriate size for the family.
